I seemed to have moved back in time with some of my CD notes. This new double CD of the complete piano concertos by Franz Xaver Scharwenka (1850-1924) is the latest addition. Of Polish birth (Franciszek Ksawery Szarwenka) in the Prussian sector of Poland, Scharwenka maintained a decidedly Polish accent in his music. As always with lesser-known figures, Scharwenka deserves to be heard in his own right, not only against the backdrop of ‘the canon’, and there are plenty of delights to be had and pauses for thought to be made in these four works spanning 1876-1908.
